If you find yourself in the centre of Vi\u0161kovo, you will be captivated by the sight of the Church of St Matthew, which was built in 1862 on the site of a former chapel. It was consecrated in 1865, which is attested to by the memorial plaque on its front fa\u00e7ade. The altar painting of St. Matthew, patron saint of Vi\u0161kovo, was the work of local painter Ivan Ba\u0161tijan<\/a>. Close to the church, there is a 250-year-old \u0161terna<\/em> water well commemorating the occasion when, during one of her journeys, the Empress Maria Theresa stopped at the spot known locally as Pogled and saw the Adriatic Sea for the first time. She ordered a well to be built there, which is today still called Cesarska<\/em>, meaning \u2018Imperial\u2019. Continuing through the centre of Vi\u0161kovo, you will reach a park with sculptures of Halubajski zvon\u010dari<\/em> bell ringers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bit further lies the village of Ronjgi, located on a hill offering a view of Mount U\u010dka and the sea. This is the birthplace of Ivan Mateti\u0107Ronjgov,<\/a> who first interpreted the Istrian scale<\/a>. His birth house today features a memorial collection dedicated to the composer\u2019s legacy, and the Ronjgi Restaurant<\/a>, which offers local specialities and a wide range of Mediterranean cuisine in an authentic ambience. The gentle landscape of the surroundings arouses curiosity, invites you to enjoy its green spaces, and inspires you to engage in recreational activities. Every village\nin Vi\u0161kovo has at least one water well, locally known as \u0161terna, <\/em>which\nwere once sources of life for the local people, and today remind us of times\ngone by and the way of life in the past. Since\npeople needed water on a daily basis, the well became the main meeting place\nfor both young and old. People would go there to meet, exchange information and\nhave a good time together. Adults would often warn\nchildren not to look over the edge of \u0161terne<\/em>\nbecause Malik, a dwarf that dwelled in caves, pits and wells, could pull them\ninside. A local legend has it that there is a Malik in every pit, guarding his\ngold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By walking\nalong the centuries-old paths and trails that connect seemingly remote\nlocations, you will notice winding dry-stone walls,\nlocally known as groma\u010de<\/em>. The simplicity and durability of these\ndry-stone walls are a metaphor for life in this area. Covered in moss, they\nstill preserve the memory of how they were created. They follow the area’s\nrelief, take us along ancient paths and former borders, and tell the story of\ndays gone by characterised by hard work and persistence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On your way\nthrough the village of Brnasi, you will notice the\ntraditional architecture of this area. The Srok House and the\n\u0160irola-Su\u0161anj House are typical examples of the\nlocal architectural heritage. A typical architectural element is tornica<\/em>, a\nsemi-circular extension of the kitchen with a fireplace and chimney, a place\nwhere the family would gather to eat and warm themselves in winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the deepest and largest depressions in Halubje is located south\nof the village of Kapiti. The depression was named Kapitov Dol, and the kali\u0107<\/em> in it is called Kapitovac. Thanks\nto its location and size, it was an inexhaustible source of water, which is why\nduring the heat of summer people from distant villages would come here. They\ncarried the water from the kali\u0107<\/em> on\ntheir backs in a wooden container called brenta<\/em>.\nThis was a gathering place, a source of the social life of the local people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next to the village of Milohni, a forest path surrounded by dry-stone\nwalls leads to a walled pond encircled by deciduous trees. The wonderful\nunspoilt natural scenery filled with bird song is a perfect oasis of peace,\nideal for taking a break from your everyday life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a day of exploring, reward yourself with traditional dishes, meat and fish specialities, and selected desserts in the area\u2019s numerous restaurants, konoba<\/em>-style taverns and pastry shops. Take a break in the nearby caf\u00e9s to enjoy a cup of delicious creamy coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you like fish and seafood, you\u2019ll love the Konoba Maretina<\/a> tavern with a long tradition of preparing fresh fish dishes in an authentic ambience. For a good barbecue and top-quality meat dishes, visit the Nono Frane<\/a>, Ronjgi<\/a> and J-I-S-T<\/a> restaurants.
